COPAN Meets with Federation Representatives

The Organizing Committee of the XIV Pan American Games (COPAN) met on Wednesday and Thursday with the presidents and other representatives of the national sports federations to learn about their requirements for the startup of the competitions of the event, which will be held here from August 1 to 17. 

The main executives of the COPAN had breakfast on the two before-mentioned days with the different representatives of the federations, with whom they exchanged ideas about the organization of their respective competitions. 

The COPAN was represented by its president, doctor José Joaquín Puello; its excutive vice-president, viceadmiral (ret.) Ramon Emilio Jimenez Reyes; the second vice-president, licenciado Manuel Estrella; the secretary, licenciado Luisin Mejia; and, by the government representative Carlos Cochon. The Administrative Sub-Secretary of Sports, licenciado David Brito, attended the meeting in representation of the Secretary of Sports, licenciado Cesar Cedeño. Likewise, the Director of the Municipal Council of the National District, Felipe Payano, represented the Mayor of the National District, Roberto Salcedo.

The federations represented in the two meetings were the taekwondo federation, by doctor Leonado Monsanto; the judo federation, by engineer Jaime Casanova; the handball federation, by Ricardo Pereyra; the cycling federation, by Juan Luis Rodriguez; the athletics federation, by licenciado Andres Polimar; the badminton federation, by professor Meregilda Urbaez; the boxing federation, by Juan Vargas.

The Federation of Art and Culture was represented by Pedro Julio Quezada; while the water ski federation, was represented by Wilson Martínez and Alberto Staffeld; the canoe federation, by Francisco Santana; the fencing federation, by Felipe Payano; the skeet shooting federation, by doctor Julio Dujarric; the swimming federation, by licenciada Lilliam Jacobs de Solano; the volleyball federation, by licenciado Alexis Garcia; the tennis federation, by Mario Emilio Guerrero; the racquetball federation, by Rafael Fernandez Vives; the roller skating federation, by Austo Arias; the jai alai federation, by Iker Burgoa Palacios; the sports medicine federation, by doctor Milton Pinedo; the softball federation, by professor Jose Luis Suero; the equestrian federation, by Jose Manuel Ramos; the basketball federation, by doctor Jorge Suncar. It is expected that more than 5000 athletes, from 42 countries, will compete in 35 sports, in the Santo Domingo 2003 Games. The countries comprise the United States, Cuba, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

Other countries that will participate are: Jamaica, Haiti, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda, Belize, Santa Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent, Netherlands Antilles (Curazao, Boanire, San Martin, Saint Eustatius and Saba), Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Antigua, Surinam, Granada and the Dominican Republic, which as the host country has a mandatory participation in the competitions of the 35 sports. The sports to be contended are: water sports (swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo), archery, athletics (track and field, marathon), badminton, basketball, baseball, bowling, boxing, canoe, cycling, equestrian, fencing, water ski, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, field hockey, judo, karate, wrestling, roller skating, jai alai, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, softball, squash, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, triathlon, sailing, volleyball (beach and indoor).
