Seven make Pan-Am Games team
Seven soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit made the U.S. Shooting Team that will compete in the Pan-American Games this summer. Two were chosen as alternates.
Staff Sgt. Armando R. Ayala made the team in the 10-meter 30+30 running target competitions, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn C. Dulohery in men's skeet, Staff Sgt. William H. Keever in men's double trap, Sgt. 1st Class Daryl L. Szarenski in air and free pistol, Staff Sgt. Jason A. Parker in men's air rifle and three position free rifle, Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Tamas in prone rifle and Maj. Michael E. Anti in prone rifle and three-position rifle.
Spc. Shane M. Barnhart (men's air rifle) and Spc. Mary K. Elsass (women's air rifle) were named as alternates.
Several civilians also made the team. They are Randy Sotowa (men's skeet), Brandie Neal and Connie Smotek (women's skeet), Bill Johnson (running target), John McNally and John Bickar (rapid fire pistol), Glenn Eller (men's double trap), Kimberly Rhode (women's double trap), Lance Bade and Chris Kiernan (men's trap), Collyn Loper (women's trap), Jason Turner (men's air pistol and free pistol), Rebecca Snyder (women's air pistol), Elizabeth Callahan (women's air pistol and sport pistol), Sandra Uptagrafft (sport pistol), Brad Wheeldon (men's air rifle), Jamie Beyerle (sport rifle and women's air rifle), Sarah Blakeslee (sport rifle), and Emily Caruso (women's air rifle).
First alternates are Kenneth Johnson (prone rifle) and Eric Uptagrafft (men's three-position rifle).
The Pan-American Games, a Western Hemisphere Olympic-style shooting championship conducted every four years, will be in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Aug. 2-9. It is the last chance for shooters from the Western Hemisphere to win quota slots for their countries to compete in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Recent victories by the shooters of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit include:
• In the USA Shooting Rifle spring selection matches at Fort Benning May 17 through Saturday, Spc. Hatti J. Johnson won the gold medal in the women's air rifle match and Parker took the gold medal in the men's air rifle match. Anti won the gold medal in the prone rifle match and Spc. Trevor D. Gathman took the silver medal. Anti also won the silver medal in the three-position free rifle match.
• In the International Pistol Interservice championships April 23 to May 2, Szarenski won the air pistol, standard pistol and center fire pistol interservice championships; he also took second place in the free pistol championship. Spc. John C. Ennis won the free pistol championship, in which Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Brian H. Zins took third. Sgt. 1st Class Eric G. Daniels won the rapid fire pistol interservice championship and finished second in the center fire championship. Zins got second place in the standard pistol championship and Sgt. Robert M. Mango was third. Mango also took third place in the center fire championship.
