Las Americas highway in time for Games?
A report in Diario Libre states that despite severe delays, the highway that runs
from the airport to the capital will be ready in time for the Pan American games,
which will start on 1 August, according to the Ministry of Public Works (SEOPC).
Works on the highway began in February 2001 – 8 months after the current government
came to power. So far, however, the project has been carried out at turtle’s pace,
creating major inconveniences for users of the important highway. Work is expected
to be accelerated now that only two months are to go for the opening of the Pan Am
Games. The project holds a price tag in excess of RD$1 billion, much of which was
derived from sovereign bonds.
