Last Anti-Doping Course for Pan-Am 2003 to be Held 

The Medical Direction of the XIV Pan American Games started the last course for the chiefs of doping control stations on Tuesday, -ending on Friday-, informed doctor Josefina Cordero, who is in charge of the anti-doping control tests of the event, which will be celebrated here from August 1 to 17. 

Cordero said that 50 health professionals of different parts of the country would be trained in the course. Among the professionals, there will be doctors, bio-analysts, nurses and clinical psychologists. Many of those health professionals will be recruited to work in Pan-Am 2003. 

The tenth course for the chiefs of stations will take place in the facilities of the Dominican Olympic Committee, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The Medical Direction of the Organizing Committee (COPAN) is in the need of 25 chiefs of stations, the same amount of assistants and 125 escorts to gather the more than one thousand samples that need to be taken in the Games Santo Domingo 2003. 

The blood samples will be analyzed in the Doping Laboratory built by the COPAN in the Toxicology area of the Dominican Social Security Institute (IDSS). 

The XIV Pan American Games will be held here and include the participation of more than 5,000 athletes from the 42 countries members of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), which will compete in 35 sports. 

Among the countries that will participate are the United States, Cuba, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Other countries that will participate are: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Haiti Santa Lucia, Cayman Islands, Surinam, British Virgin Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Bermuda, Bahamas, Belize, Antigua, Dominica, Aruba, Netherlands Antilles (Saba, Saint Eustatius, San Martin, Bonaire, Curacao), Saint Vincent, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Granada, Guyana and Dominican Republic, which as the host country has a mandatory participation in the competitions of the 35 sports.

Among the sports to be contended are: athletics, baseball, basketball, boxing, karate, wrestling, cycling (road, track and mountain), volleyball (beach and indoor), bowling, sailing, water ski, equestrian, squash, badminton, racquetball, modern pentathlon, triathlon and shooting.
