Course for Judges and Fencing Assistants Qualified as Successful 

The president of the Dominican Fencing Federation, Felipe Payano, qualified as very successful the course for judges and fencing assistants that took place on May 28 and 29. 

Payano remarked that the course, celebrated in the offices of the Fencing Federation (in the Coliseo de Bobxeo Carlos Teo Cruz), served to improve the knowledge of the rules of the sport of 21 technicians, who received the training on how to perform the scoring and act as assistants of the directors of the competition. 

Te course was given by professor Giorge Kolomatovich, a nationalized American, originally from Russia. It was the second course about the application and mastering of e fencing rules given for the XIV Pan American Games. Thirty-five participants attended the first course. 

The attendants to both courses will have the opportunity to practice the acquired knowledge in the trial fencing competitions, which are programmed to take place from June 11 to 15. 

Fencing will be one of the 35 sports to be contended in the Santo Domingo 2003 Games, in which athletes from 42 countries will compete. 

Among the countries that will participate in the event are the United States, Cuba, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

Other countries that will participate as well are: Jamaica, Haiti, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda, Belize, Santa Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent, Netherlands Antilles (Curacao, Bonaire, San Martin, San Eustatius and Saba), Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands Dominica, Antigua, Surinam, Granada and the Dominican Republic, which as the host country has a mandatory participation in the competitions of the 35 sports.

The sports to be contended are: water sports (swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo), archery, athletics (track and field, marathon), badminton, basketball, baseball, bowling, boxing, canoe, cycling, equestrian, fencing, water ski, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, field hockey, judo, karate, wrestling, roller skating, jai alai, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, softball, squash, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, triathlon, sailing, volleyball (beach and indoor).
