No soft opening of the athletes’ village
Colonel Amilcar Fernández told El Caribe that there is no time for a soft opening at the athletes’ village for the Pan Am Games. He said the ideal situation would have been for the Dominican athletes to be lodged there weeks ago to test the complex, but the delays in construction have pushed the opening date to the deadline. He said that the aqueduct of the village is being connected this Saturday to provide water to the center. He said that he has received the promise of builders Consorcio Sanak that the village would be delivered the first week of July. “According to them [Sanak], on Satuday, 5 July, they will deliver everything, fully equipped,” said Fernández.
Fernández also said the Dominican delegation would be the first to move into the village on 22 July, with foreign guests beginning to make their arrivals also on 22 July. He said the mess hall for the athletes would open its doors and begin serving on the same day.
Fernández compared the 12-building village to a mega-hotel with capacity for 7,000 people. “If we could have everything fixed so that the athletes could be lodged many days before the deadline, it would be much better and serve as support for our athletes, who could then settle in…It would also serve as a test trial of the village,” he told the newspaper.
