Guyana performs pre-registration and becomes 42nd country in PAN AM-2003

Guyana completed the 42-member list of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) by pre-registering its participation in the in the XIV Pan American Games, to be held in this country from August 1 to 17, stated yesterday the Sports Director of the Organizing Committee (COPAN), Nelson Ramirez. Guyana pre-registered 21 athletes in five sports, 14 for the male competitions and seven for the female competitions; as well as eight officials, a total of 29 persons.

Guyana pre-registered 21 athletes in five sports, 14 for the male competitions and seven for the female competitions; as well as eight officials, a total of 29 persons. 

Ramirez said that there is a total of six thousand seven hundred and sixty-nine, 4,110 male athletes and 2,659 female athletes. Likewise, there are two thousand four hundred and thirty-three officials (trainers and delegates). The total of pre-inscribed participants for the Santo Domingo 2003 Games is nine thousand two hundred and two. This figure does not include the judges and referees, who are not part of the delegations. 

Guyana pre-registered two athletes, a man and a woman, for swimming competitions. Twelve athletes will participate in the athletics competitions, seven men and five women. 

Two athletes were registered for weightlifting competitions, a man and a woman. Likewise, two participants were registered to participate in table tennis competitions and three men for riffle shooting competitions. 

Ramirez underlined that the pre-registration of the 42 countries members of the PASO represents a great support from the countries in the Americas to the organization of the Games Santo Domingo. 

Ramirez explained that the deadline of the nominal registration of participants in Pan Am-2003 is July 2003 at 12:00 p.m. In this occasion, the pre-registration has been numerical. 

It is expected that more than five thousand athletes will compete in 35 sports, during the XIV Pan American Games. Presently, 41 out of the 42 countries members of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) have already pre-registered. Only Guyana´s pre-registration is pending, and it is still possible

The countries that have already pre-registered in the different competitions are the United States, Cuba, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Peru, Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Panama, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala and Puerto Rico.

Other countries that have pre-registered are: Jamaica, Haiti, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Barbados, Bahamas, Bermuda, Belize, Santa Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent, Netherlands Antilles (Curazao, Boanire, San Martin, Saint Eustatius and Saba), Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Antigua, Surinam, Granada and the Dominican Republic, which as the host country has a mandatory participation in the competitions of the 35 sports. The sports to be contended are: water sports (swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water polo), archery, athletics (track and field, marathon), badminton, basketball, baseball, bowling, boxing, canoe, cycling, equestrian, fencing, water ski, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, field hockey, judo, karate, wrestling, roller skating, jai alai, modern pentathlon, racquetball, rowing, softball, squash, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, triathlon, sailing, volleyball (beach and indoor).
