Helicopters for the Pan Am Games
Award winning journalist Ana Mitila Lora asks for more information on the 19 helicopters that the government has purchased to provide security for the Pan American Games. In her page-two column of the Listín Diario she asks: “How, why and with what money did the government buy the 19 helicopters?” She is referring to a story in El Caribe that explained about the three types of helicopters to be used during the Games, including the five ambulance models assigned to the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, the East Park, the Athletes Village, in Jarabacoa, and to the rowing and canoeing facility. Also mentioned are the four Robinson 22 Bell helicopters and the nine Bell OH58 models for the transport of troops, according to General Gustavo Jorge García, who is responsible for the security of the Games.
“So that we can play happily, it would be nice if they surprised us with transparency and clarity in all these purchases. The Games are a commitment imposed on our country, but we must recall that medicine is scarce in hospitals and we are supposedly going through a severe economic crisis.” Lora can be emailed at
