Pan Am Games opening and closing
TV producer Freddy Beras Goico, artistic director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 14th Panamerican Games scheduled to open in Santo Domingo, Friday, 1 August, said that all is ready for the opening and closing ceremonies. According to Beras Goico, 12,000 people will participate in the extravaganza whose price tag so far stands at RD$25 million. Contemporary Latin music legend Juan Luis Guerra will be the star of the closing ceremony on 17 August at the Olympic Stadium. The televised opening and closing shows are slated for 7pm and will each last two and a half hours. At 6 pm a pre-show comedy will be staged, recreating the Olympic Games as having had their start in the Dominican Republic instead of in Greece.
As reported in Hoy newspaper, the theme for both ceremonies will be the poem by Pedro Mir entitled “Hay un país en el mundo”.
DR1 news sources likewise say that the Rafael Solano “Por Amor” song will provide the backdrop as it is performed in different music rhythms by bachata groups to the national symphony ochestra.
In addition to Guerra, other artists to take the stage will be Johnny Ventura, Milly Quezada, Wilfrido Vargas, Maridalia Hernández, Sonia Silvestre, Niní Cáffaro, Víctor Víctor, Francisco Ulloa, and Zacarías Ferreira. Xiomara Fortuna, Roldán, Agapito Pascual, Joe Veras, Frank Reyes, Vladimir Dotel, the National Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Maestro Carlos Piantini), the National Choir, National Folklore Ballet and the National Dominican Ballet will also contribute.
Speakers for the events will include Mario Vásquez, president of the Panamerican Sports Organization, President Hipólito Mejía, and the president of the Dominican Organizing Committee, Dr. José Joaquín Puello.
