Argentina will be fielding their very best field hockey players at the XIV Pan American Games in search of their eighth championship in the women’s competition of that sport, announced Jorge Querejeta, member of the Executive Committee of that country’s Association and of the Development Committee of the International Hockey Federation.
"The best Argentine players will be on this team, the champions at the Olympic Games in Sidney and the Pan American Games in Winnipeg” disclosed Querejeta who is attending the II Men’s Field Hockey Tour of the Americas, a warm-up event prior to competition in that discipline at the XIV Pan American Games that will be held between August 1st and 17th.
Querejeta explained the Argentine women’s team will be made up of the best players as they will be travelling to the Netherlands the day after the closing of the Pan-American Games to participate in the Hockey World Championship, where the top 6 teams in the world will be playing.
He pointed out that their participation here will be really important as it will be a good warm-up for the World Championship. He also mentioned the Argentine girls are anxious to repeat their performance in Winnipeg, Canada (1999) where they won the Pan American tournament.
Among the star players of the Argentine team he mentioned the names of Magdalena Aicega and Karina Masotta, considered to be among the finest hockey players in the world.
In the history of the Pan American Games Argentine Women’s hockey seized seven gold medals and two silver medals to become the team with best performance in these events.
Field hockey was played in the Pan American Games of 1967 in Winnipeg, Canada, for the first time where the Argentine women’s team won. They also won in Cali, Colombia (1971), Mexico (1975), San Juan, Puerto Rico (1979). They lost the final to Canada in Caracas, Venezuela (1983).
